Renowned for creating entertaining, innovative, and accessible productions, the Stanford Shakespeare Company has received highly positive reviews both locally and nationally in the London-based magazine Plays International. A student-run repertory theatre company, the Company has previously produced such Shakespearean favorites as Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, Othello, Twelfth Night, Hamlet, and Macbeth. Our most recent productions, Twelfth Night (Winter 2024) and Titus Andronicus …and Zombies! (Spring 2024) completely sold out all four shows.
The Stanford Daily, in a review of our 2019 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, lauded our “marvelous execution" that "pay homage to the Bard while portraying a fresh understanding of the play”. The Stanford Daily praised the talents of both our actors and technical crew, noting “the actorial talents of the company", but also our "overall set design” that “creates a marvelous interplay reflecting how […] us “foolish mortals” straddle the lines of fiction and reality“.
Prominent Shakespearean scholar Stephen Orgel acclaimed the troupe’s production of Titus Andronicus (Winter 2008) as “a genuinely original conception of the play, elegant and economical staging, and an adept and articulated performance with some really distinguished acting. I would go to see anything done by this excellent group.”
The Company consists of Stanford’s top student actors and tech crew who are devoted to the study and performance of Shakespeare. The Stanford Shakespeare Company strives to share the joy of Shakespeare with the Bay Area community by putting on free, high quality shows and doing outreach events, and we are extremely grateful to the Stanford Student Body, to the ASSU, and to The Stanford Fund for supporting us with Special Fees!
